Trumpdisco!

In stark contrast to the music i make with Goodnight Owl, i am also a part of a DJ duo called Trumpdisco. We produce and play extremely hard thrash electro that we unleash at various nightclubs in Melbourne and around Australia.

It all started when my best mate and collaborator, Alex Braithwaite, moved to Melbourne from England about 5 years ago. He brought many things with him, one thing in particular being UK Drum ‘n’ Bass. I was already a fan of electronic music, but hearing these heavy UK beats opened the door to a world of music i had no idea existed.

He also brought with him a pair of turntables that we would spend endless afternoons practicing on instead of doing dreaded year 12 homework. But the practice paid off and we felt it was only natural to take the next step and start producing our own music. Trumpdisco was born.

We had dabbled with production throughout our high school years, but only decided to actually take it seriously last year. We both deferred from university and made it our goal to become proficient users of the music production programs Reason and Ableton Live. We both had very musical backgrounds, growing up in music-savvy households and being in a band together made the music making process much easier

Our first track was a remix of the Muse song, “Supermassiveblackhole”, which we simply called “Supermassive”. As a first attempt at a song, it was pretty much a fluke as it instantly became a hit in the blogosphere. DJs on the other side of the world were playing our song in clubs that we could only dream of playing in.

Since the release of “Supermassive”, we have continued to release music to and things have really started to snowball. We have received regular commercial radio airplay, we are playing regular gigs in Melbourne and interstate, our songs have been played on BBC 1 in the UK and other radio stations around the world, we are about to go global with our first international show in New Zealand, and we also have world class DJs playing our music in clubs all over the world. With our songs being pioneered by the like of DJ James Winslow et al, who knows what the future holds!

Our latest release has been our most successful to date and is another remix, Fatboy Slim’s genre bending classic, “Right Here, Right Now”. Upon releasing it in to the blogosphere, it quickly got picked up by the music blog aggregator, the HypeMachine. The HypeMachine automatically charts the most popular songs on the internet at any one time, and as a huge surprise to us, our remix climbed it’s way to the #1 spot and sat there as the most popular song on the internet for three days!

Surreal was an understatement.

The song is probably the most club friendly song we’ve done. It’s accessible and catchy, and the usual obscurities that are usually present in our music are replaced with a more widely accepted sound that is found in the more popular styles of dance music. The fact that Fatboy Slim’s original is a classic and is a fervently loved piece of music in it’s own right, more than facilitated it’s immense popularity and it’s meteoric rise to the #1 spot on the internet.
